THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE
Often poets strive to build cohesion in their work. Yet as readers surprise and discordant notes offer us wild moments of joy and inspire reflection. In this workshop we will read and generate poems that surprise and delight.

HYPERTEXT POETRY
Hypertext poetry, an experimental sub-genre of digital poetry, creates a non-linear experience for the reader. Links can be visual, text or even sound. In using hyperlinks, beginning are no longer beginnings and ends are no longer ends. If you are interested in experimenting with form, hypertext poetry moves beyond the page and offers opportunity for the unexpected with constraints in the digital sphere. To get started, we will review experimental poetry (and specifically hypertext poetry) and get started on generating our first hypertext poem.

MISSIVES
Poems can be written, and read, as letters. The epistolary form is one way to put it, yes, but I prefer the term Missives, whose sound holds and delivers a certain longing to the ear. Something is unresolved that needs our attention. There is the hope of a respons#23ffe5e, but no guarantees. Let’s read letter-poems while employing the letter form as a lens for reading work that is both urgent and thrilling in its plea for a reply. We’ll read work by Emily Dickinson, Lucille Clifton, and Rhina P. Espaillat and then dive into some writing exercises.

SECURELY WRITING INSECURITY: THE POWER OF DOUBT

In this salon we will harness the power of the perhaps by examining how doubt can help bolster our artistic voice. We will look at poems dealing with doubt/uncertainty and will learn a few “doubt-injecting” techniques.
